of monkey cakes + frosting faces
Saturday night was my niece Addison’s first birthday party. I made her a monkey cake, a la Smitten Kitchen, and it turned out so darn cute, I just had to share.
Addie ate one of the cupcake “ears” and man, she really went to town. Who knew chocolate frosting could get into that many places? On her face, up her nose, in her hair, on her tutu, on the floor. She’s a wild woman, that one.
Oh Addie, it’s hard to believe that exactly one year ago today, I was pacing a waiting room, waiting anxiously to meet you. The first time I saw you, you were a tiny bundle in a pink bird blanket, with a fluff of hair and barely open eyes. You were so small I was terrified I would break you. And now here you are, twelve months later, crawling everywhere, happily pulling dishtowels out of drawers and throwing them in the air, giggling and eating and clapping and making everyone around you crazy with love.
The other night, as the party went on into the night, I went upstairs with you and we snuggled on the bed, trying to get you to fall asleep. I sang you “Moon River” and “Girl from the North Country”, brushing your hair off your face and listening to your funny, whiffling little snores. Tucking you in with your bunny blanket, I ached with the blessing it is to be your aunt, to love you and see you grow up.
You make me look forward to being a mother so much.
But for now, it is a beautiful thing to be your aunt.
I love you, little (middle) namesake of mine.
