To My Future Self: Have You Cleaned Under Your Bed Lately? Because You Probably Should.

May 10, 2009

Who knew you could write emails from the past to future versions of yourself? (Or other people.)

Seriously.
So cool.
Like time travel, but with words. Which to me is so much more rad than actual time travel, which seems iffy and inconvenient.

I just wrote myself an email that I will receive in exactly one year. Here’s a snippet that I wanted to share:

Today was a good day. You woke up at Sandra’s, went and drank coffee and talked about the Holy Spirit. Both of you are struggling with liking the Bible right now, and don’t really understand a lot of what you feel like you should understand because you’re a Christian and all. But that whole “not understanding” thing…it’s okay. Remember that.

You drove home and went over to the fam’s after that, and spent Mother’s Day eating and laughing. Jo is pregnant and you are still calling the baby “Bean.” We tried to decide on names all afternoon. By the time you read this, the baby will be there, with a name and a personality all its own…you are absolutely nuts for this little person already, and it’s only the size of a lemon. A lemon with a heartbeat.

You are happy right now. In all your restlessness, you have found peace. God is taking away the notion that to be happy, you have to have it all figured out. You don’t. That’s never His way. His way is really just to learn what each day is and who you are within it. Your job for today isn’t figuring out tomorrow.

What would you say to yourself in the future? What advice do you have for Future You…or Future Me…or Future Someone?

@Sabrina: It really is very neat — I had to not get carried away and write one to myself in like 2050. I honestly just doubt I’d have the same email address at that point.

I hope you have fun with it!

I would tell myself in the future: “You can endure more than you think you can. Remember what you’ve been through and hang in there.”

Also, where did you come up with the “Time Tunnel” idea? You’re way too young to remember that show.

@ Glo: Yes! Please come visit this summer, anytime!

@ MIke: As for “Time Tunnel,” I Google-Imaged “time travel” and this is what came up. No idea that it was a TV show.
