Help, Help, Help!

May 26, 2009

I like to think I’m tech-literate and extremely snazzy when it comes to all things social media-related.

Um that’s a self-told lie.
I’m not really at all.

It’s part of my job even — I maintain a blog for the nonprofit I work for, and today, I am beyond frustrated (so I’m listening to Flight of the Conchords to keep me giggling and not bashing my head through the window). Between Twitter refusing to upload my carefully designed background, and deciding it hates all my HTML widgets that I want to add, I am on the verge of a) weeping or b) switching to Blogger.

Well, I’ve been working on this blog (the work one) for over a year, so I’ll be damned if I switch to Blogger now. I’m not a quitter! I don’t know enough about HTML and CSS to switch to, so I am at an impasse.

So I turn to you, faithful blogging friends. I need to figure out several things:

a) Have any of you had any success adding a FeedBurner widget that allows you to put a little box for people to type their email address into, or do only the link widgets work?

b) How do you add a Facebook widget to a blog? I’ve seen them on several others, but remain woefully ignorant.

c) There’s no other Twitter widgets that work for blogs other than the one they offer, correct? No ones that are prettier and easier to read? I like the Flash ones from, but apparently WordPress does not.

Any other suggestions or ideas for how to snazz up both my blog and the one I maintain for work, let me know. Whenever I am trying anything new, I’m basically going in blind and figuring out things as I go along. I have no formal training in any of this — quite obviously.

Also, a great resource for anyone who is super into social media and all the possibilities it offers:

Hmm. I’ve often thought about going back to blogger, but I think the same thing as you do. I’ve come too far now!

    1) Feedburner – for me, the only thing that works is the link
    2) I think you need to create a Facebook badge (done on Facebook), and FB will give you the code for you to copy/paste into a text widget. I’ve never tried it, but that’s my guess.
    3) I’ve also had frustrations with Twitter/Wordpress. The only thing I’ve found to work is the WordPress twitter widget. Blah.

Thank you to both of you! Very helpful!

P.S. I will now have “Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros” stuck in my head the rest of the day.
