Baking with Ira

August 28, 2009

I have happened  upon a new favorite hobby.

Me.

My wee studio kitchen where my table doubles as an extra counter top.

Baking (this week, it’s been red velvet cupcakes and caramel-sea salt cookies that are currently in the oven and smell so good that I want to hug/consume the whole oven).

Listening to the magic of Ira Glass and This American Life.

Have you ever listened to TAL? It’s a hour-long radio program hosted by the iconic Jewish dreamboat, Ira Glass, and aired on Chicago Public Radio. Each week, a theme is chosen for the show, and the hour is spent examining stories from around the country that center around this theme. I’ve listened to probably four or five episodes in the last few days, and hands down, this one emerges as my favorite. Chronicling a group of men at a high-security prison in St. Louis who put on a production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” it was an incredibly powerful example of redemption — it’s called “Act V.”

While you listen to that, I’m going to dance in anticipation around my kitchen table, which now contains two cooling sheets of caramel-sea salt cookies, and wait the exactly 6 minutes until I can try one. I’ll let you know how they are.

    Oh my lovely Caroline,

There are certain blog entries of yours that make me want to run away to MI and hole myself up in your tiny studio for a few weeks/months/years. I will be the perfect guest, when you want to be alone, you won’t even know I’m there. When you need someone to try foods and give you a hug, I’ll be close by.

    @ Frank!

Awwww. 🙂 I would love to have you come hang with me anytime. There is a cozy armchair with your name on it here in my tiny studio.

    @ Sandra!

I know, I know. TAL was introduced to me by you and you alone. Love you, dearest.
