“This Most Amazing Day”
I have had all sorts of thoughts buzzing about in my head lately, which has produced a messy handful of notes that I wrote to myself all over the place — on walks, while driving (at stoplights), and when I woke up in the middle of the night.
But those thoughts are still forming themselves into something more than scrap paper scrawls.
For now, because today is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated for simply being itself, and because I just love ee cummings, I share this poem with you. (I so dearly want to sneak out of work, and go find wherever this picture was taken, and wander there all day, with a book of poetry, a big cup of coffee, and a good friend.)
i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday;this is the birth
day of life and love and wings:and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any-lifted from the no
of all nothing-human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
