lenten prayer: day 19 (for kelley + her garden)

March 10, 2010

My friend Kelley is planting a community garden in an empty city lot this summer — taking something urban and ugly and making it something that bubbles over with life. I don’t know a whole lot about gardening but I love listening to her talk about it. Her passion makes it come alive in my mind and I can feel the earth crumbling between my fingers and smell the hot tomato plants stretching into the summer sun. I can see the garden through her eyes and I am getting quite excited about offering up my services as an expert plant weeder and (ahem) taste tester in exchange for fresh produce. (Amusingly enough, we grew up together and used to have a gardening club called the Garden Girls. Oh, sweet irony!)

As she plans this garden, she asked me if I might write a prayer about it.

So I present…

Prayer for Kelley’s Garden

Lord God, breathe Your spirit into this garden
May it be a place that speaks to resurrection, postures itself towards new life
May it fill this previously empty place with life abundant
We ask You to be here, allowing Your spirit to instruct and move us
Sow the seeds of hope, of justice and of love
So we might be harvesters of joy in our city streets
Crying forth, “Jubilee! Jubilee!”
We pray this garden will be a love letter to Your good earth
May our hands learn to love the solid coolness of dirt
And the toil of a day worked beneath the stretches of the sky
Connect us with the foundational truths of what it means to be human
And to live generously from the earth
Declare victory for all that is green and good
May we love well, tend faithfully and share generously with each other.

Caroline, What a beautiful prayer to our Creator God. I believe He will produce beauty, abundance and joy as Kelley, accompanied by her sowing and weeding friends, work so closely with Him in the dirt He created.
May it be all for His glory as He brings forth truth in the many lives that will be touched by this project of growth and goodness.

    @ Christie and Tricia!

Thanks so much for the kind words and the visit. Kelley is lucky to have such supportive people in her life! I’m glad the prayer spoke to you.
