my ‘thirty before thirty’

August 29, 2010

Today marks the beginning of the 26th year I have lived in this beautiful world.

As I begin the second half of my twenties, I find myself feeling rather contemplative. What do I want these next five years to look like? Usually, I have a tough enough time looking at next week, but I think it might be good to make some goals for myself. Sometimes the point isn’t always checking things off a list, but reminding myself simply to dream.

So here it is — my “Thirty Things I Want to Do Before I Turn Thirty”

  1. Visit a new continent.
  2. Grow a garden.
  3. Read Anna Karenina.
  4. Run a 5k.
  5. Live in a new place.
  6. Work at a bakery.
  7. Successfully start my own Etsy bakeshop.
  8. Learn to salsa dance.
  9. Go back to England.
  10. Cook my way through an entire cookbook.
  11. Take a cross-country road trip.
  12. Learn more about photography.
  13. Take my niece camping.
  14. Hike a mountain.
  15. Learn to make cheese.
  16. Buy a house.
  17. Have chickens.
  18. Read the entire poetry collection of Wendell Berry.
  19. See James Taylor live.
  20. Volunteer in a place that challenges my assumptions.
  21. Learn how to sew.
  22. Journal regularly.
  23. Join a CSA.
  24. Learn how to budget.
  25. Drive my car as sparingly as possible.
  26. Buy a bike.
  27. Watch more sunrises.
  28. Learn how to use sourdough starter.
  29. Befriend someone I don’t agree with.
  30. Write more handwritten letters.

So that’s it — I’m sure, as my weeks and months roll on, items will change and grow. It’s always a good idea to give yourself room to wiggle.

Have a beautiful Sabbath day, my dears!

Wow, those are some mighty big goals, but I have no doubt you will achieve every single one of them. You are such an inspiration!

Happy birthday! This is a great list. James Taylor live is sheer perfection- I’m just bummed I didn’t catch this last tour with Carole King.

I put together my own 30 before 30 list while I was in California! And you wanna know something cool? One of the things on my list is to go on a cross-country road trip. Great minds, my sweet Caroline. 🙂

(What I wrote about it[though I didn’t quite have the courage to put up what made the list…perhaps that should change]: http://honeymim.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/577/ )

Love your list! Anna Karenina is my favorite book and I’m happy to see it on your list.
