make it free

September 3, 2010

This morning is the first cool morning where I wake up shivering in a tank top. I put on the kettle and am soon sitting by the open window, enjoying the chilly breezes and the steam coming off of the cup of peppermint tea next to me.

I’m reading Wendell Berry (who is appropriate for most situations of quiet and joy) and I came across this little piece in a poem where he describes feeding the birds that come to the small stone shack in the fields where he writes each day.

And the man, knowing
the price of seed, wishes
they would take more care.
But they understand only
what is free, and he
can give only as they
will take. Thus they have
enlightened him. He buys
the seed, to make it free.
-from “Window Poems” (1968)

Wherever you are, I hope your morning is beautiful.
