fist pump tuesday

December 7, 2010

Here’s what’s making my fist pump this week!

1. Bakery Practical Exam ACED! — I went in for my bakery practical exam this morning, nervous after a night of unsettling dreams. I felt like my head was screwed on backwards, I was convinced I was going to have to make biscotti and strudel (two baked goods that scare me the most) and I was nearly in stress tears on the walk in. Of course, as usual, I was panicking for nothing. I made a lovely round of herbed foccacia and two trays of bran muffins and walked away with a 99% on my exam and several verbal pats on the back from Chef. Not only did he pronounce my food “perfect” (minus two not-quite-all-the-way-round foccacias) but he told me that he loved having me in class and thought I have a “quiet strength.” I nearly started crying again. Sigh.

(I texted one of my best friends to let her know how I did and her response was “Of course you did, Betty Crocker.” Heehee.)

2. Chocolat Chaud — I want this thick, rich French hot chocolate like whoa. I’ve been craving it for a week, but it doesn’t seem like much fun to have it alone. So I’m waiting for a good opportunity or, rather more importantly, a good friend to come along. This recipe sounds tantalizing but I found one in David Lebovitz’s The Sweet Life in Paris that I’ve got a hankering to try. Mmmm, chocolat chaud with a big bowl of freshly whipped cream and perhaps a plate of almond cookies. Heaven!

3. Surprise Pressies! — In the last three days, I have received TWO surprise Christmas presents in the mail! A darling Christmas apron from my totally awesome Grandma (love you!) and a bunch of homemade candles from a former co-worker and friend. Between the things I’ve already baked in the apron and the scented candles, my apartment is smellin’ good. And it’s the smell of love!

Do share — how is your fist pumping this week?

Congrats on acing the exam AND the compliments! How’s that for affirmation that you’re doing what you’re meant to do?

Oh, good, the apron arrived. I mean it to be just a congratulatory gift because I KNEW you would ACE the exam even before felt that you would. Caroline, you are such an amazing person! Remember, you even took four years of French long before you hit on the idea to become a Chef. How SPECIAL is that? Love – Grandma

    @ Leigh!

Thank ya! It’s definitely confirmation and was very affirming to me. Hence the choked-up throat tears.

    @ Grandma!

Yes, I was going to call and then I got distracted by baking cookies and, well, you know the rest. 🙂 I was thinking of you while I was baking — thinking of those twisty candy canes cookies we used to bake together at Christmas. You helped mold me into the burgeoning chef I am! 🙂

    Love you so much!
