Books I Recommend

I love love LOVE to recommend books to people. I am a black-belt bibliophile and am always giving out recommendations. Here are (only some of) my favorites, alphabetically because I can’t prioritize favorites because I just want to choose them all.

Curl up and enjoy!

  • Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (my favorite out of all the Austens…and the most underrated)
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (because I’m a woman and this book contains Mr. Darcy…duh)
  • Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell (reminds you why Jesus is worth following…go ahead and read all his books)
  • Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (this book sucked me in like some kind of dark magic)
  • Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson (for any Anglophile or Brit, you will laugh so hard you’ll wet your trousers)
  • The Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne (it will change you, period)
  • Jesus for President by Shane Claiborne (asks the question of who you are first, a child of God or an American)
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (I know you all had to read this in high school…go read it again)
  • A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway (documenting Hem’s life as an expat in 1920s Paris)
  • Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (on writing and in many ways, about life)
  • Chronicles of Narnia series by CS Lewis (the first books I really fell in love with)
  • The Great Divorce by CS Lewis (what would a day trip to Heaven from Hell look like?)
  • Till We Have Faces by CS Lewis (a beautiful retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche)
  • Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes (travel lit at its best, a sensual feast…and way different than the movie)
  • A Generous Orthodoxy by Brian McLaren (a brilliant look at how we can appreciate and draw from all Christian denominations; his other books are also fantastic and quite feisty)
  • Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller (one of the most read books I own…you find yourself in it, no matter who you are)
  • Through Painted Deserts by Donald Miller (inspires me to leave home and wander every damn time…who am I kidding, just read the man’s collected works, I love them all)
  • The Chosen by Chaim Potok (world, meet Danny Saunders…you’ll never be the same)
  • My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok (a Hasidic Jew who paints cruxifications? I’m listening…)
  • The War of Art by Steven Pressfield (a kick in the pants for anyone who has ever had a dream and avoided it)
  • Harry Potter series by JK Rowling (they really are that good)
  • The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (it’s not just a children’s book…it’s so much more)
  • Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck (will make you want to hit the road with your favorite pooch; also, read East of Eden and basically everything else this man wrote)
  • The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (purely classic…I reread this book usually once a year)
  • A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken (anyone who has ever thought about love, been in love, or lost love must read this; so, so beautiful)
